The fifth-most populous county in Indiana, it was named for the St. Joseph River which flows through it toward Lake Michigan. The county is home to the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg, an American politician that is a graduate of Harvard University, a Rhodes Scholar, and a veteran of the War in Afghanistan.
